Geometry Dash
My favorite meeting of my local quilt guild every year is our challenge meeting, and this year's challenge was all about geometry...so many directions people can go for this one, and my favorite part is hearing all the stories behind each person's inspiration, whether grand or mundane. Last year, which was all about your favorite song, some of the stories moved me to tears. Geometry wasn't quite as personal a challenge, but there were still some gems.
Geometry took my mind almost instantly to the game Geometry Dash, which is this incredibly challenging game in which you try to jump through all these spikes and pointy things to get to the end. I can't emphasize enough how hard this game is!! I have been known to try 100+ times and not get past 50% completion on a level that my kids deem "not very hard"…my patience and perseverance usually outlasts their interest in watching me fail over and over :)
My son has played the game a fair amount, and also creates his own levels, which is a whole different challenge - to learn how to create something that is excessively difficult but also physically possible to beat - it takes a TON of trial and error and teeny tiny adjustments to every little piece and part of the course. This quilt is based on a screen shot of one of the levels my son made:
Here is the screen shot:
I pieced the background relatively quickly, and then tried so many different ideas to achieve this almost ethereal quality of the block/spike towers - couching, fabric paint, back stitch...maybe others I can't remember! When I got the idea to use cyanotype, I almost scrapped the whole background and started over, but due to a great suggestion from a friend, I ended up cutting up my cyanotype draft and hand applique-ing those pieces to the original background, perfectly covering the messy paint job that I really didn't like!!

While tiny, this quilt packed in a lot of creative challenge and experimentation for me this year, and it was a lot of fun and also annoying at times (it sat in time out for several months!!) I'm really happy with how it turned out, and am also happy it's done :)
