Ocean Quilt

This year, I’m hosting an all-improv charity bee in the DC Modern Quilt Guild. I offered the first prompt, which was:

Make a 10.5” quilt block in colors that remind you of the ocean with at least one curve

My favorite part of being in a quilting bee is seeing how different members interpret the same prompt! This was really exciting last year with my Green Leaves quilt as well:

As the blocks roll in, it’s so fun to see what people make, all from the same simple prompt.

When all the blocks were in, I had fun playing with them, moving them around on my design wall until I found the layout I liked:

Then I hand quilted the piece with gentle rolling waves in a variegated thread ranging from light to dark blue.

Probably the most fun of the entire quiltmaking process was the photo shoot that my daughter helped me with - I finished the quilt during a recent trip to the beach, and we laughed so hard trying to get photos of the quilt with the right lighting, without shadows, near the waves, near the jellyfish…as we continued, it got funnier and funnier!!

The quilt was not harmed in the photography process, and is now perfectly washed, dried and ready to donate! The quilt will be donated to the DC Diaper Bank via the DC Modern Quilt Guild

Each block was made by a member of our improv bee, and I pieced the back of the quilt:

I’ve been curious about exploring large-scale curves recently, and this was a fun challenge that I’m looking forward to diving into more in the coming months.
