Ocean Quilt Blocks

For the last few years, I’ve hosted a charity bee in the DC Modern Quilt Guild. This year, I asked if we could try something new and create an all-improv bee - every single prompt will ask quilters in the bee to sew an improvisationally-pieced block.

I kicked the bee off in April, with the prompt:

Make a 10.5” block in colors that remind you of the ocean with at least one curve

The blocks that people have created so far are absolutely stunning! It is so thrilling to me to see the different colors and shapes and approaches that each person takes to creating a block from the prompt.

There are a few more blocks coming in the mail, and then it will be time to play with layout! I’m really looking forward to that part, I typically put all the pieces up on my design wall and keep moving/shifting them around over several days until I have a feeling of satisfaction with how the quilt top looks!

Hopefully more news on this project very soon 💙
