WIP Round Up

Last spring, I shared a round-up of all of my Works in Progress (WIPs), and the process of reviewing and writing about each one turned out to be so helpful for me! So I’ve decided to do it again, this time on Instagram Quilt Fest WIP day!

Here are 10 of my current Works in Progress that I’m most keen to work on - I’m also pleased to share that five of the ten WIPs I shared last year are now completed quilts! Three are still WIPs (shared below!) and two I’m likely going to let go and scrap for materials 💜

Quota

Started: April 2024

Story: Quota quilt pattern by Andrea Deal, made the quilt top as part of the Quota Quilt Along with Gotham Quilts

Next step(s): Basting and quilting

Roadblocks: Same as last year - I don’t know what the quilt is “for,” whether I want to keep it or perhaps turn it into a charity quilt. Just not high enough motivation to move it to the top of the pile.

Aperiodic

Started: December 2023

Story: Aperiodic quilt pattern by Janice of Prairie and Ocean, light and dark shades of purple Essex Linen

Next step(s): Quilting

Roadblocks: It feels heavy and harder on my wrists than other hand quilting projects, I might need to figure out a more ergonomic solution - maybe a frame or quilting with it on a table?

African Wax Print Improv Log Cabin

Started: October 2025

Story: I’ve been collecting Ankara fabric scraps for some time, and finally started piecing with them, but without a clear plan of what they might become. Now I have an idea, and I think it will move more quickly!

Next step(s): Piece 13 more blocks!

Roadblocks: none

Autumn Rail Fence

Started: Not sure - I think I’ve had the jelly roll in my collection since as early as fall of 2022!!

Story: This will be a charity quilt for my local quilt guild’s drive for Frederick Health Hospice this year

Next step(s): Prepare for longarming

Roadblocks: none

Movement

Started: December 2023

Story: I made a Movement Menu of my favorite types of movement, and I’ve been tracking any and all of it, without regard for minutes/miles/etc. Each 2.5” square is color-coded to represent one of my favorite types of movement, and they are placed chronologically upper left to lower right in each 16-patch block.

Next step(s): Catch up on piecing a LOT of blocks - Ive pieced 43 blocks, but I have data to piece from as far back as May 2025!

Roadblocks: One of my challenges is keeping enough 2.5” squares “stocked” in the most common colors (pink for walking has been huge!). I think the biggest current roadblock is needing to take the time to cut 2.5” squares of my abundant collection of print fabric scraps. Which is a win-win, because if I could move some scraps out of that bin, maybe the lid could close :)

BLOEM

Started: February 2026

Story: I’ve wanted to make a version of Libs Elliott’s BLOEM pattern using ice-dyed fabrics for quite a while, and recently in consultation with a friend I now have a size and layout plan!!

Next step(s): Cut pieces, piece blocks

Roadblocks: For a while the roadblock was that the project got buried (literally) under a pile. But it has been rescued, and is now in my little WIP bin easily accessible and ready for action!

Improv no. 2

Started: December 2025

Story: Part of a series of quilts inspired by Cody Cook-Parrott’s Poetics of Shapes workshop on the Quilty Nook

Next step(s): Quilt! I have a pretty variegated hand quilting thread and quilting motif picked

Roadblocks: none

Effervescence

Started: January 2025

Story: Quilt top is a pattern by Yvonne Fuchs, I participated in the quilt along in early 2025

Next step(s): Quilt! I have hand quilting thread color (black!) and quilting plan picked out, simple horizontal lines across the width of the quilt (not marked, just freehand)

Roadblocks: none

SOFT

Started: January 2026

Story: I created this quilt top so fast!! I intended to join the Quilt Along with Heidi Parkes for the month of February, but got so inspired by the prompts in her Scavenger Hunt quilt pattern that I made it in just a few days :)

Next step(s): Continue quilting

Roadblocks: The thread I picked is actually a glossy crochet thread (size 10) that I picked up at a quilters’ yard sale last year, and the ends of the thread tend to fuzz a lot, making threading the needle difficult. I’ve also noticed I don’t love the way it glides (or doesn’t glide?) through the fabric differently than the threads I’m used to. It’s not insurmountable, just has slowed me down a bit.

Counting Clouds

Started: March 2026

Story: I’m joining the Pantone Quilt Challenge for the first time this year

Next step(s): Continue working on the quilt top

Roadblocks: none - I’m enjoying working on this project and haven’t shared anything about it yet, which is fun for me to explore (I typically share every little detail! But this project feels a little more personal and I feel inclined to keep it to myself until I’m ready to share.

So there you have it - my top 10 WIPs as of today!! There are other projects (one or two things caught my eye while I was rummaging around to get photos of some of these!), but I’d say these are the majority of my current WIPs. I hope to continue this as a tradition next year, and see how many of these have become quilts!
