Workshops

  • Tending the Seams

Tending the Seams is an invitation to slow down and gently tend to what connects us: fabric and body, breath and thread, muscle and memory. Co-hosted by Sue of Give Rise Studio and Quilting Julia, this workshop weaves together slow stitching and yin yoga as parallel practices of patience, presence, and care.

  • Creative Quilting Studio

Do you have a creative quilting project you’d like to make, but need help getting started? Are you drawn to the creative side of quilting, but want some guidance and help with techniques? Join us for one or all of three small-group sessions to work on your own original creative quilting project.

  • Improv Piecing

Have you ever tried sewing without a pattern? Come spend the afternoon working quickly and intuitively, experimenting with improvisational piecing, playing with color and discovering unexpected shapes as they emerge. Your challenge: create a 30” square quilt top by the end of the day!

  • Hand Quilted Scrappy Mini

Follow your instincts to compose an original scrappy mini quilt without a plan (also known as improv!). We will assemble the fabric pieces quickly and intuitively, then slow down and learn the simple and meditative art of hand quilting, adding texture and depth to our composition.

  • Stitching the City

So much can be found at the pace of a walk. Take inspiration from a short walk in Downtown Frederick to create a one-of-a-kind mini quilt top revealing some detail of the city that interests you.

  • Worn to Warm: Upcycle Garments to Quilt Blocks

Do you have a garment in your closet that doesn’t fit your body or your style anymore but is too precious to donate or recycle? Dig up that garment and come transform it into textile art!

  • Mini Story Quilt

Manifest a story you want to tell in a mini-quilt/small study. This class will include a writing exercise and work session to conceive, design, and create your mini quilt.

  • Hand Quiltling & Tea

In this workshop, we’ll gather together to learn the art of hand quilting and enjoy a tea tasting with teas from Shab Row Tea Emporium here in Frederick. You’ll stitch an original wholecloth hand-quilted mini quilt in one of five colors of peppered cotton.

  • Matchstick Quilted Valentines

If you love the art of snail mail, come join us for a fun evening making quilted valentines! We will intuitively sew together solid color fabric scraps and machine quilt them for a clean, textured finish.

  • Beginner Quiltmaking Series

Are you curious about quilting, but not sure where to start? Join us and make a baby-sized quilt from start to finish! This four-week course is packed with tips and tricks to get you started cutting fabric, piecing your blocks, hand quilting, and binding.

  • Narrative Quiltmaking Studio

This four-week course links the deeply rich human tradition of storytelling with textile art, bringing stories to life in fabric. Create a unique handmade quilt top exploring a specific personal story with relevance to collective human experiences.

  • KIDS Stitch a Story

Kids ages 7-11 are invited to draw or write a story and then bring their story to life in fabric! Kids will have lots of options, including hand or machine appliqué, embroidery, and fabric markers and watercolor pencils to add details to their textile story.
